Season Review
The 2023/24 Colts season will live long in the memory of everyone involved. Under the leadership of coaches Cornelius McGrath and Joe Calverley, we enjoyed a magnificent campaign. Beating the Centaurs in pre season set the standard, allowing us to travel away to Coventry full of hope. Emre’s early dismissal made things difficult, but we battled hard to secure a 1-1 draw. Then came our low point. We never really got going at Derby, and a sloppy performance meant we succumbed to our first loss of the season. But things got better. And then some. We went the rest of Michaelmas unbeaten, winning away at Leicester and Brookes as well as securing impressive draws against Coventry and the Centaurs. A great platform to build on.
We began the second half of our campaign with a pre-season game against Harry Way’s Blues. Seeing it as an opportunity to build sharpness, we didn’t put too much pressure on ourselves – although we knew at our fortress (Uni Parks) we’d have a chance. It also gave our coaches the opportunity to display their tactical intelligence, as they experimented with a new and advanced three at the back system. It worked. Che Bernard’s miss from 0.5 yards will go down in Colts history, but we managed to hold out for a 0-0 draw. A great way to start Hilary term. Following on from this, we mounted a promotion push. Following a draw against the Centaurs, we beat Leicester and Derby in dominant displays. Our tactics of defensive solidity and long-balls to Angus worked wonders, and we felt ready for our Varsity match against Cambridge.
